Key Takeaways for Canadian Buyers
- 1.The 100% tariff nearly doubled the price of Chinese EVs — a BYD Seal went from ~$45K to ~$90K, making them uncompetitive with non-Chinese alternatives.
- 2.The new 6.1% CUSMA tariff saves buyers $20,000–$55,000+ depending on the model, bringing prices back into a competitive range.
- 3.While Chinese EVs are not eligible for the federal EVAP ($5,000), some provincial rebates (e.g. Quebec Roulez Vert $2,000) may still apply, further reducing costs on top of the new lower tariff prices.
- 4.The Lotus Eletre (luxury, $120K base) shows the largest absolute tariff savings (~$55K), while the BYD Seagull shows the highest relative impact.
FAQ — Chinese EV Tariffs in Canada
Why did Canada impose 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs?
In October 2024, Canada matched US tariff policy to protect domestic auto manufacturing from lower-cost Chinese EVs. The 100% surtax was added on top of the existing MFN rate for all Chinese-made electric vehicles.
What changed in March 2026?
Following the January 2026 announcement, Canada's new EV quota system became effective March 1, 2026, reducing tariffs to 6.1% for the first 49,000 Chinese EVs imported annually, with 100% tariff applying to vehicles beyond the quota. This brought Chinese EV prices back into a competitive range for Canadian buyers.
Are all Chinese EVs now at 6.1% tariff?
Only vehicles produced in CUSMA-compliant facilities qualify for the 6.1% rate. Others may still face higher tariffs. Check with individual manufacturers for their compliance status before purchasing.
Are Chinese EVs eligible for Canadian incentives?
Chinese EVs are NOT eligible for the federal EVAP rebate ($5,000), which requires assembly in Canada or a free-trade agreement (FTA/CUSMA) partner country — China is not one. This exclusion is independent of the 100% surtax; even if the surtax were eliminated, Chinese EVs would remain EVAP-ineligible. However, some provincial incentives may apply — for example, Quebec's Roulez Vert offers up to $2,000 (reduced from $7,000 in January 2026). The 6.1% tariff still makes Chinese EVs more price-competitive overall.
Will tariffs change again in 2026?
Tariff policy remains subject to ongoing trade negotiations. The current 6.1% rate reflects the January 2026 CUSMA adjustment. Monitor official Government of Canada announcements for the latest updates.
Which Chinese EV brands are available in Canada?
BYD, NIO, XPeng, Zeekr, Chery (Omoda), Jaecoo, and Lotus (Chinese-owned) are all entering or already present in the Canadian market. BYD has the most confirmed models, including the Seal, Dolphin, ATTO 3, and Han.
