Canada's annual quota is 49,000 vehicles, which Global Affairs Canada allocates in two six-month periods of 24,500. The counter above tracks the current period only.

Once a period’s quota is filled, further Chinese EVs cannot be imported until the next period opens — the shipments are not simply taxed at a higher rate.

The BYD Story

Wang Chuanfu founded BYD in 1995 with 20 employees and a dream to make rechargeable batteries. By 2003, BYD entered the auto industry. By 2008, Warren Buffett invested $230M for an 8% stake — a bet that has returned over 30x. In 2020, BYD launched the revolutionary Blade Battery, which uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry in a cell-to-pack design that eliminates thermal runaway risk entirely. This single innovation made BYD vehicles the safest EVs on the market. By 2024, BYD was selling more EVs than Tesla globally, with 10 models confirmed for Canada starting at just $22,000 CAD.

BYD in Canada

BYD registered with Transport Canada in early 2026, clearing the regulatory path to sell vehicles directly. With 7 models spanning from the $22K Seagull city car to the $72K Han luxury sedan, BYD covers every segment. Quebec buyers benefit from up to $2,000 in provincial incentives (Chinese EVs are not eligible for the federal EVAP), bringing the Seagull to $20,000 — the cheapest new car in Canadian history. BYD's Blade Battery is also designed for extreme cold, maintaining 80%+ range at -20°C thanks to advanced thermal management.

BYD in Canada — frequently asked questions

How much does a BYD cost in Canada?

BYD models announced for Canada range from $22,000 to $72,000 CAD, with the Seagull as the entry model at $22,000. These are estimated prices before provincial incentives; Chinese-built EVs are not eligible for the federal EVAP program. A 6.1% import tariff has applied since March 1, 2026.

When is BYD coming to Canada?

BYD is targeting a Canadian launch in late 2026, with 20 dealerships planned. Dates depend on Transport Canada homologation and the 49,000-unit annual import quota in force since March 1, 2026. We update this page as soon as a model is confirmed with a Canadian distributor.

Is BYD officially coming to Canada?

Yes. BYD is targeting a Canadian launch in late 2026, backed by 20 planned dealerships. 10 models are announced for the Canadian market, starting at $22,000 CAD. Imports run through the federal 49,000-vehicle annual quota, with a 6.1% tariff in force since March 1, 2026.

Which BYD models are coming to Canada?

10 BYD models are announced for the Canadian market: Seagull ($22,000), Dolphin ($33,000), Seal ($44,990), ATTO 3 ($34,990), Han ($72,000), Tang ($65,000), Seal U ($48,000), Shark 6 ($55,000), Sealion 7 ($52,000), Sealion 6 ($46,000).

Can I buy a Chinese EV in Canada right now?

Not yet for BYD: the brand is targeting its first dealerships in late 2026, starting with Toronto, with volume deliveries to follow. Today the only Chinese-built model already offered in Canada is the Lotus Eletre. In the meantime, buyers can follow the launch and sign up for availability alerts — reservation lists open before showrooms do.

Is BYD better than Tesla?

It depends on the criterion. BYD overtook Tesla as the world's top EV seller in 2024 and leans on its Blade LFP battery (safety, longevity, cold-weather performance) and much lower prices — from $22,000 CAD. Tesla keeps the edge on the Supercharger network, established resale value and its software ecosystem. Our BYD vs Tesla comparison breaks down both lineups for the Canadian context.
