How much could you save on the BYD Seal U?

Overview

About the BYD Seal U

The BYD Seal U is the family-sized answer to Canada's most common question: can an electric SUV actually replace the RAV4 in the driveway? With 500 km of WLTP range from a 71 kWh Blade LFP battery, seating for five and a 520-litre trunk, it covers school runs, Costco hauls and the Montreal–Quebec City round trip without charging anxiety. The LFP chemistry tolerates daily 100% charges and cold-weather cycling better than conventional packs — a real advantage for Canadian winters, where you should still plan for roughly 25% less range at -20°C. DC fast charging peaks at 110 kW, enough for a 30-to-80% top-up during a highway lunch stop. At an estimated $48,000 CAD, it undercuts most comparably equipped electric SUVs, and Quebec's Roulez vert rebate can bring it down further — though like all Chinese-built EVs, it is not eligible for the federal EVAP program.

Editorial take

Our Verdict

Strengths

  • 500 km WLTP range covers real family trips — Montreal to Quebec City and back
  • Blade LFP battery: daily 100% charging without degradation worry, strong winter durability
  • 520 L trunk and true 5-seat family space at a compact-SUV price

Watch Out For

  • 110 kW DC charging is mid-pack — road-trip stops run longer than 800V rivals
  • FWD only — no all-wheel-drive option for deep-snow regions
  • Not eligible for the $5,000 federal EVAP rebate (Chinese-built)

What this means for Canada

Careful with the name: BYD sells two different vehicles called Seal U. This page covers the battery-electric one — the Seal U DM-i is a plug-in hybrid with a much smaller battery and 18 kW DC charging, and its equipment list does not transfer. BYD Europe confirms the heat pump as standard, which is the single most useful item on this list for a Canadian winter. BYD does not publish AC or DC charging power on its European Seal U page, so we quote none here.

The two columns do not rest on the same footing. The rival is described from its Canadian specification; the Chinese vehicle from the market where it is actually sold today. Any future Canadian version could differ.

Tesla Model Y Standard RangeThese figures describe the Rear-Wheel Drive, the version this page covers. The Premium All-Wheel Drive at $64,990 adds 15-speaker audio with a subwoofer, ventilated front seats and 11.5 kW AC charging. Separately, Tesla publishes unusually little equipment detail in Canada: a heat pump, Apple CarPlay, front trunk volume and pack architecture appear nowhere on tesla.com/en_CA — for the heat pump that is a documentation gap, not a missing part, so read those cells as unknown rather than absent. What Tesla does confirm: NACS charging with a J1772 adapter included, and Full Self-Driving (Supervised) as an $11,000 option or $99 a month.

"Not published" means the manufacturer does not document this — not that the vehicle lacks it.

How fast does the BYD Seal U charge?

The BYD Seal U supports DC fast charging up to 110 kW. A 10-80% charge takes approximately 30-80% in 28 min. The 71 kWh LFP battery provides excellent longevity.

How much does the BYD Seal U cost in Canada?

The BYD Seal U is estimated at $48,000 CAD. Chinese EVs are not eligible for the federal EVAP rebate ($5,000). In Quebec, the provincial Roulez vert rebate can bring the price down to $46,000.

What battery type does the BYD Seal U use?
