Key Takeaways

  • BYD sells two different vehicles under the Seal U name: a battery-electric SUV, covered in this guide, and the Seal U DM-i, a plug-in hybrid with a much smaller battery and 18 kW DC charging.
  • The Seal U Design sold in Europe combines an 87 kWh Blade LFP battery, 500 km of WLTP range, a 160 kW motor driving the front wheels and five seats.
  • BYD has announced no Canadian price for the Seal U, so china-ev.ca uses its own figure: starting from an estimated $48,000 CAD.

The BYD Seal U is a mid-size electric SUV from BYD, and the version china-ev.ca describes is the Design sold in Europe: an 87 kWh Blade LFP battery, 500 km of WLTP range, five seats and front-wheel drive. It is not sold in Canada. BYD has announced no launch date, no model lineup and no price for this country, and nothing says the Seal U will come here at all. This guide sets out what BYD Europe's documentation says about the vehicle, what china-ev.ca estimates, and what remains unknown.

Seal U or Seal U DM-i: two vehicles, one name

BYD sells two different vehicles under the Seal U name: a battery-electric SUV, covered in this guide, and the Seal U DM-i, a plug-in hybrid with a much smaller battery and 18 kW DC charging. The figures and the equipment list of the DM-i do not transfer to the electric model. Before relying on a price, a range or a review of a "Seal U", check which of the two it describes.

The electric Seal U itself comes in two versions in Europe:

  • Design: 87 kWh battery and 500 km of WLTP range. This is the version described in this guide and on our vehicle page.
  • Comfort: 71.8 kWh battery, 420 km of WLTP range, 310 Nm, 0 to 100 km/h in 9.3 seconds, 115 kW DC charging (10 to 80% in 42 minutes) and 2,020 kg.

In the rest of this guide, every Seal U figure is a Design figure. The Seal U is also a separate model from the Seal, which is a sedan, and from the Sealion models.

Specifications of the Seal U Design

The Seal U Design sold in Europe combines an 87 kWh Blade LFP battery, 500 km of WLTP range, a 160 kW motor driving the front wheels and five seats. The figures below come from BYD Europe's documentation for that version:

  • Battery: 87 kWh, Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP)
  • Range: 500 km on the WLTP cycle
  • Power and torque: 160 kW (218 hp) and 330 Nm
  • 0 to 100 km/h: 9.6 seconds
  • Top speed: 175 km/h
  • Drive: front-wheel drive only
  • Seats: five
  • Trunk: 425 litres, 1,440 litres with the rear seats folded
  • Dimensions: 4,785 x 1,890 x 1,668 mm
  • Weight: 2,147 kg
  • DC fast charging: 140 kW peak, 10 to 80% in 43 minutes
  • AC charging: 11 kW

Some of these figures deserve a comment. At 9.6 seconds to reach 100 km/h and a top speed of 175 km/h, this is a calm family vehicle, not a performance SUV. A trunk of 425 litres with the seats up is modest for an SUV that is 4.79 m long, although it grows to 1,440 litres with the rear seats folded. The electric Seal U is front-wheel drive only, a limit to weigh in regions with deep snow.

The following items are listed as standard in BYD Europe's documentation for the Design: heat pump, vehicle-to-load (V2L), 15.6-inch rotating screen, head-up display, sliding panoramic roof, heated and ventilated front seats, 360-degree camera, power tailgate, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, automatic emergency braking and blind spot monitoring. With V2L, the battery can power camping gear or tools. This is the European equipment list: a Canadian version, if there is one, could differ.

Price and cost: an estimate, not a BYD figure

BYD has announced no Canadian price for the Seal U, so china-ev.ca uses its own figure: starting from an estimated $48,000 CAD. It is our estimate, not a BYD price, and it could change as soon as BYD publishes anything for Canada.

Against the starting prices in our database, the estimate sits below two rivals that are available today:

  • Tesla Model Y: from $49,990, which is $1,990 more than our Seal U estimate
  • Hyundai Ioniq 5: from $55,499, which is $7,499 more

Incentives change that picture. The federal EVAP rebate is worth up to $5,000, and the Seal U, like every Chinese-built EV, is not eligible for it. The rear-wheel-drive Model Y is on Transport Canada's list of eligible vehicles, checked on October 13, 2026: because $5,000 is more than the $1,990 gap, the rebate can reverse the comparison. The Ioniq 5 is not on that list, which covers vehicles with a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $50,000 or less. Eligibility is decided on the final transaction value, which must not exceed $50,000, so at its starting price its $7,499 gap stands. Comparing starting prices alone is therefore misleading.

In Quebec, the Roulez vert rebate is $2,000, with no restriction on the vehicle's country of origin. But the program ends on December 31, 2026, and the date that counts is the registration date. With no launch date from BYD, getting a Seal U registered in Quebec before that deadline is very unlikely. Do not count on it in your budget.

Insurance is the other part of the cost of ownership, whatever the vehicle. Comparing quotes now, for your current vehicle or for a rival you are considering, gives you a reference point for later.

Range and winter: what 500 km means

The 500 km figure is a WLTP rating, from the European test cycle. The ranges in our database for the Model Y and the Ioniq 5 are North American ratings, and WLTP is the more generous cycle. The figures are therefore not directly comparable, and this guide does not rank them.

For winter, china-ev.ca uses a planning rule of thumb, which is not a BYD figure: count about 25% less range at -20 °C. For the Design, that gives roughly 375 km instead of 500.

As an example, Montreal to Quebec City is about 250 km one way. That is comfortably within range, even in deep cold. It says nothing about the return trip: plan to charge before driving back.

Two items in BYD Europe's documentation matter in cold weather. The heat pump is listed as standard on both versions, and it is the most useful item on the equipment list for a Canadian winter. The brochure also specifies that its charging times assume an ambient temperature of 25 °C: expect longer stops in the cold.

Charging: 140 kW and 43 minutes

DC fast charging on the Design peaks at 140 kW, and BYD quotes 43 minutes to go from 10 to 80%. AC charging is 11 kW. These figures come from BYD Europe's technical brochure, because its product page shows no charging power.

On the same 10 to 80% basis, our database lists 18 minutes for the Hyundai Ioniq 5, in line with the "under 18 minutes" that Hyundai Europe quotes for the 84 kWh battery at a 350 kW station. A stop therefore takes more than twice as long with the Seal U. We have no verified 10 to 80% time for the Tesla Model Y, so this guide does not compare the two on that basis.

For a household that charges at home and rarely drives long distances, that matters little. For frequent long trips, it is the main weakness of the Seal U. None of these times has been measured by china-ev.ca.

On the AC side, 11 kW is the European figure. Nothing is known about the onboard charger of a possible Canadian version, so it is too early to choose a home charging station around this vehicle.

Canada: nothing announced by BYD so far

BYD has announced no launch date, no model lineup and no price for Canada. Nothing says the Seal U will be sold here, or in which version.

BYD Canada's website is explicit about where things stand. Its terms of use, effective August 3, 2026 and re-read by our team on October 12, 2026, state that the site does not currently permit vehicle purchases, leases, financing applications, reservations, pre-orders or deposits. BYD's Canadian site therefore takes no reservation and no deposit today, for any model. A request for a deposit on a BYD in Canada would not match what BYD's own site says.

"Late 2026", the timing often mentioned for BYD's arrival in Canada, comes from press reports, not from BYD. Our BYD Canada page follows what has actually been verified about the launch.

On the trade side, the 100% surtax on Chinese-built EVs was lifted on March 1, 2026: within an annual quota of 49,000 vehicles, they now enter at the regular 6.1% tariff. Our guide to Chinese electric vehicles in Canada explains that framework.

What to do in the meantime

What china-ev.ca offers is an availability alert on its BYD Seal U page. It is an alert from our team, not a reservation with BYD.

Until BYD announces something, four habits are useful:

  • Check which Seal U a price, a range or a review describes: electric or DM-i, Design or Comfort.
  • Compare with the vehicles available today on both the starting price and rebate eligibility.
  • Leave Roulez vert out of a Seal U budget.
  • Wait for Canadian specifications before choosing a home charging station.

FAQ

Is the BYD Seal U available in Canada?

No. The Seal U is not sold in Canada, and BYD has announced no launch date, no model lineup and no price for this country. BYD Canada's terms of use state that its site does not currently permit purchases, reservations or deposits. "Late 2026", the timing often mentioned, comes from press reports, not from BYD.

What is the difference between the Seal U and the Seal U DM-i?

They are two different vehicles. The Seal U covered here is battery-electric, with an 87 kWh battery and 500 km of WLTP range in its Design version. The Seal U DM-i is a plug-in hybrid with a much smaller battery and 18 kW DC charging. Their figures and equipment lists are not interchangeable.

How much will the BYD Seal U cost in Canada?

BYD has announced no Canadian price. The china-ev.ca figure, starting from an estimated $48,000 CAD, is the site's own estimate, not a BYD figure.

Does the Seal U qualify for the federal rebate or for Roulez vert?

It does not qualify for the federal EVAP rebate: no Chinese-built EV does. Quebec's Roulez vert rebate of $2,000 has no restriction on country of origin, but it ends on December 31, 2026 and the registration date is what counts. With no launch date from BYD, a Seal U registered in Quebec by then is very unlikely: do not count on it.

How far does the Seal U go in winter?

The planning rule of thumb used on china-ev.ca, which is not a BYD figure, is about 25% less range at -20 °C: roughly 375 km instead of the 500 km WLTP of the Design. It is a planning figure, not a measurement.

How fast does the Seal U charge?

The Design peaks at 140 kW on DC fast charging and takes 43 minutes to go from 10 to 80%, according to BYD Europe's technical brochure. AC charging is 11 kW. On the same 10 to 80% basis, our database lists 18 minutes for the Ioniq 5; we have no verified time for the Model Y.

Is the Seal U all-wheel drive?

No. The electric Seal U is front-wheel drive only, with no all-wheel-drive option.

Where do the figures in this guide come from?

The Seal U figures are those of the Design version in BYD Europe's documentation. The rival figures come from the china-ev.ca vehicle database, the price is china-ev.ca's own estimate, and the winter range is a planning rule of thumb.
