Overview
About the XPeng G6
The XPeng G6 is the rare Chinese EV that carries European build quality: it is assembled by Magna Steyr in Austria, the same contract manufacturer that builds vehicles for BMW and Jaguar Land Rover. A 280 kW ultra-fast 800V charging system fills the 87.5 kWh NMC battery from 10 to 80% in just 20 minutes — among the fastest in any EV at this price. The dual-motor AWD layout produces 350 kW and 660 Nm, hitting 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, while the 571-litre trunk rivals compact SUVs for real cargo utility. Range is 570 km WLTP; budget roughly 425 km in a Quebec winter. Inside, XPeng's XNGP driver assistance system is among the most advanced outside of Tesla's FSD, though its Canadian functionality is unconfirmed. At an estimated $42,000 CAD, the G6 undercuts the Tesla Model Y by about $13,000 and qualifies for Quebec's $2,000 Roulez vert rebate. The downsides: despite Austrian assembly, the G6's Chinese brand origin likely excludes it from the federal EVAP rebate, XPeng has no Canadian dealer presence, and the brand is still building name recognition outside China.
Editorial take
Our Verdict
Strengths
- 280 kW 800V charging: 10-80% in 20 minutes — near class-leading speed
- Magna Steyr assembly in Austria — European build quality for a Chinese-brand EV
- $42,000 with 570 km WLTP and 571 L cargo — undercuts Model Y by $13K

What this means for Canada
The headline number is the charging: 382 kW on the entry car and 451 kW on the others, 10 to 80% in twelve minutes on an 800 V platform. Very little at any price charges faster. Note that XPeng restyled the G6 in 2025 — the current European car uses 68.5 and 80.8 kWh packs and dropped the LiDAR for a vision-only system, so older figures quoting an 87.5 kWh battery describe the pre-facelift car. Vehicle-to-load is standard but XPeng does not publish its output in kW.

The two columns do not rest on the same footing. The rival is described from its Canadian specification; the Chinese vehicle from the market where it is actually sold today. Any future Canadian version could differ.
Hyundai Ioniq 5 — The one to beat on winter equipment: heat pump, battery heating and battery preconditioning are standard on all three configurations, not optional. Charging is NACS with both AC and DC CCS adapters included, so public fast charging works either way. Hyundai does not publish a peak DC figure in kW — only that 10 to 80% takes about 18 minutes on a 350 kW charger — and gives no kW rating for its vehicle-to-load outlet.
"Not published" means the manufacturer does not document this — not that the vehicle lacks it.
